Our research with Paesaggi Italiani continues, moving beyond well-known landmarks to explore the world of geology. With Cave, we venture into the very core of our mountains, uncovering the materials they are made of and capturing their unique colours and textures. We extract stone from Italy’s most significant quarries and combine it with glass, imprinting the essence and atmosphere of the surrounding landscape onto its surface. Our journey begins in the valley at the foot of Tivoli—ancient Tibur—between the Via Tiburtina and the River Aniene, where Roman Travertine has been quarried for centuries. We explore the Barco Quarries, first opened by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, whose stone helped shape the monuments and architecture that still define the city of Rome today. Lapis Tiburtinus, the stone of Tivoli, is a porous, calcareous marble with elegant striations. Its natural cavities, formed along irregular veins, are enhanced by a polishing process that preserves the raw beauty of the material. Travertine is a silent, warm stone—deeply familiar to our artistic and cultural heritage.
