You have probably seen them before, in real life or in photos: old barns, farms and mountain huts high in the Alps. These barns, often older than ourselves, are used in summer to store food for livestock in winter. Extreme weathering at high altitudes has given the softwood planks beautiful, deep grooves. The bright sun in both summer and winter creates unique colour patterns in the wood. This gives the planks a black-grey to light brown colour, also known as ‘Sonnengebrant’. We carefully grade these planks for shades of brown and grey.
When the barns need renovation or demolition, we buy them. The barns are then dismantled and the wood is transported to the Netherlands. Once it arrives, the wood goes to the drying room. Here, our barnwood ‘Innsbrück’ is carefully dried to make it suitable for use in interiors. The drying process also prevents problems with any insects.
