SUKIMA - Nickel/Caviar
Handmade rectangular wool rug
In Japanese, Sukima can be translated as the subtle intervals or gaps that permit space, light and air to exist quietly between forms. Consequently, the rug draws inspiration from Musō-gōshi, a traditional Japanese lattice, whose vertical rhythm creates subtle intervals of openness, known as Sukima. Inspiration for this rug was derived from the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo, where warm light filters through at a steady, softened pace through various structural layers. Much like this exemplary piece of architecture, SUKIMA is a design that plays with light and contrast beautifully across its tactile surface.
The FACE collection explores the complex “faces” or façades of Kengo Kuma’s architectural works, highlighting their subtle and captivating fragments, textures, and transitions revealed through light, materials, and nature. As a result, bold colours were not necessary: the collection favours natural, earthy tones—shades of brown, taupe, beige, and grey—enhanced by striking black and white graphic accents. The rugs are available in several colour variations, offering great versatility for contemporary interiors.
The use of wool reflects Kengo Kuma’s appreciation for natural materials, while regenerated viscose provides the rigidity required to achieve his innovative three-dimensional designs, showcasing his distinctive exploration of materials. The result is a contemporary aesthetic: a collection designed to last over time and become an integral part of interiors, enriching them for generations.
