PEACOCK CHAIR
Armchair with steel wire frame
Peacock Chair is a chair with an electro-welded and electro-polished stainless steel frame; cushions in polyurethane foam and recycled polyester velveteen; removable fabric cover.
Among Verner Panton's first designs, the Peacock Chair was created in 1959 as part of the Wire series, the famous collection of furniture made of steel wire that marked a definitive break with the tradition of Scandinavian wooden furniture. At a time when most Danish designers favoured natural woods, Panton chose wire, attracted by its lightness and transparency, but also by its ability to reflect the surrounding colours. His intention was to create furniture that looked as if it were drawn in the air.
A fluid work of unpredictable shapes and manifesto aesthetics, the Peacock Chair is reminiscent of the opening of a peacock's tail, evoking its multifaceted beauty, which is also recalled in the model's name.
In a kaleidoscopic synaesthesia, visual comfort triumphs in a frame of shapes and colours: above the frame, a sophisticated intersection of steel geometries, the seat opens up like a hemispherical niche, welcoming the upholstered part. Conceived as a dynamic system, it is composed of seven round cushions, the central one is fixed to the structure and the other six are free in their arrangement, designed to generate a different, intimate and immersive configuration each time.
