REVERSIBLE SPACE PROGRAM
Solid wood chaise longue
The RSP is a reversible space design system developed by smarin. It is a set of modular blocks and components designed to create flexible, evolving, and activable spaces.
Composition and materials:
Modular blocks made from natural materials, mainly:
Solid wood (often spruce or oak)
Expanded cork
These materials are selected for their ecological qualities (renewable, recyclable, non-toxic) and their sensory comfort (warmth, texture, softness).
Construction principle:
No nails or screws: assembly by interlocking, pegs, or simple physical connections.
Inspired by elementary construction systems and building games (such as Lego or smarin’s Bà-Ba).
Allows the creation of:
Tables, desks
Seats, benches, tiered seating
Partitions, spatial dividers
Stages, platforms
Play and learning structures
Functions and philosophy:
Polytopology: each element has multiple potential uses depending on its orientation and combination.
Reconfigurability: spaces can be transformed quickly for workshops, performances, meetings, rest, or educational activities.
Somatic design: promotes bodily awareness and physical interaction with the space.
Ecological and durable design: low-impact materials, high longevity, optimised storage and transport.
Participatory design: users become co-creators and active participants (moving, assembling, reconfiguring).
