BOREALIS
Rectangular oak coffee table
Borealis is a low rectangular coffee table made of oak wood.
Borealis is the new modular seating system in which wooden surfaces blend with soft, carefully shaped volumes. Designed by Snøhetta, the system will be previewed during Paris Design Week 2025, embodying a shared approach that combines craftsmanship, comfort, and contemporary design. The name Borealis evokes a Nordic atmosphere, inspired by nature and lightness. The choice reflects Snøhetta's connection to Scandinavian tradition and the deep connection between its architecture and the landscape.
The shapes and details of Borealis communicate clarity and intentionality: each element contributes to the overall harmony of the system. Its design strength is based on a modular logic: a square-based module becomes the generative unit from which a complete collection of armchairs, two- and three-seater sofas, benches, and coffee tables comes to life. Each component is designed to ensure formal and dimensional consistency, allowing for both free compositions and serial configurations, adaptable to different contexts.
The system is built around an exposed oak frame, designed to accommodate and enhance the upholstered elements. The padding, made of different densities of foam, ensures ergonomics and comfort even during prolonged use. The essential geometry defines a precise and rational formal identity, giving Borealis a balanced architectural presence. Despite its apparent simplicity, the structure incorporates technical details designed for durability, ergonomics, and ease of assembly. The horizontal surfaces—armrests, backrests, and sides—are transformed into functional surfaces for support and interaction, making Borealis ideal for waiting rooms, lounges, and meeting spaces.
