Dominik Scharfer collaborates with Dinodo Studio on the Preliminary Aftershocks collection, presenting a series of limited-edition artworks inspired by ancient Rome. This collection features four distinct pieces, each limited to nine editions plus an artist’s proof, crafted using the finest hand-knotting techniques with exceptionally fine knots. These works evoke Roman-inspired ruins, featuring scratches and textures reminiscent of fallen columns, fragmented busts, and other relics, as if ancient artifacts had collapsed and scattered across the floor.
Drawing inspiration from the ruins of ancient Rome, this series of limited-edition art rugs/ tapestries explores the fragility of cultural heritage in an ever-changing world. Through meticulously hand-knotted designs, Scharfer translates the textures and forms of collapsed columns, shattered busts, and scattered relics into tactile works of art. Preliminary Aftershocks is more than a collection; it is a dialogue between the past and present, highlighting the weathered beauty of ancient artifacts, using fragmented forms to evoke the collapse of monuments and the fading of cultural symbols. These pieces serve as metaphors for the disconnection and loss of meaning in contemporary life, inviting viewers to reflect on their relationship with history and the importance of preserving itsremnants. Scharfer’s choice of the rug as a medium is deeply symbolic, echoing the fate of ancient Roman artifacts that have fallen to the ground, scattered and fragmented by time. By embedding the textures of collapsed columns and shattered relics into a surface that lies beneath our feet, Scharfer transforms the rug into a poignant canvas of memory and loss. This deliberate grounding of his art invites viewers to consider the fragility of cultural heritage, placing the remnants of history quite literally underfoot, where their presence demands both reverence and reflection.
