SHYRDAK
Rectangular wool rug
After serving as the artist representative and Cultural Ambassador for the Kyrgyz National Pavilion at the 59th Biennale di Venezia, FarmanFarmaian presented an immersive, community-oriented textile-based work titled "GATES OF TURAN." This project marked the culmination of a year spent living nomadically alongside tribal Kyrgyz craftswomen in the Tien Shan Range. Building upon this experience, the Shyrdak Series represents a natural progression in collaboration with Kyrgyz tribal nomadic culture.

The Contemporary Nomads collection by Firouz FarmanFarmaian is a tribute to the nomadic lifestyle, blending ancient traditions with modern artistic expression. This collection includes three distinct series: Talisman Tattoos, Shyrdak Series, and The World as Tent, each bringing its own unique narrative and crafted with traditional techniques. The Talisman Tattoos, produced in Nepal, transform sacred Amazigh tattoo artistry into meditative, hand-knotted rugs, invoking themes of spiritual protection and identity. The Shyrdak Series, crafted in Kyrgyzstan, is a collection of hand-felted rugs, deeply rooted in Kyrgyz tribal traditions, that embody the nomadic way of life and its rich symbolism. Finally, The World as Tent, also produced in Nepal, draws inspiration from the nomadic tent as a symbol of transience and adaptability, offering a profound reflection on the impermanence of contemporary existence. With Contemporary Nomads, FarmanFarmaian invites viewers into a world where cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and philosophical reflection converge. Each piece transcends its material form, celebrating the timeless connections between past and present, tradition and innovation.
