CH66
Sled base chrome plated steel chair
CH66 is a chair with a sled base and tubular steel frame in chrome-plated stainless steel or painted black; seat and back in leather; metal springs.
A chair rooted in our collective memory, CH66 was designed in 1966 by Nicos Zographos (1931-2023), a name that Cassina was already familiar with following a collaboration with the company in 1964.
An architect, designer and interior designer, Zographos was very close to the Bauhaus philosophy and worked intensively on the true essence of design, giving importance to function as well as form, using the highest quality materials and always with meticulous attention to detail, values that he shares today with both Karakter and Cassina.
Strongly inspired by the Bauhaus movement, CH66 starts from the typical cantilever chair and inverts it, creating a double curve that draws a profile with a strong visual impact, between the backrest and the seat. Its presence, rigorous and elegant, is defined by clean and essential geometries, while its structure, a continuous line of chrome-plated tubular steel, has gentle curves that perfectly accommodate the body.
Present in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York, this year CH66 returns to life in the Karakter x Cassina collection thanks to an in-depth study carried out in collaboration with the daughters Athena and Fotini Zographos, offering a versatile solution that fits into a multitude of contexts both residential and contract.
In keeping with the original design, the CH66 chair is made of four chrome-plated steel tubes in stainless steel or painted black, bent and shaped with extreme precision and fixed with screws, deliberately left visible on the backrest to keep its upholstery in place. The result is a distinctive structure that seems to be almost suspended in space. The seat and backrest, which have the exact same curvature, are upholstered in a particularly fine leather, available in various colours, stretched and fixed by means of metal springs that guarantee a high degree of elasticity, as well as considerable comfort, giving shape to an aesthetic detail of great refinement.
