KITSÜ, a functional artwork by Jonathän Jouan, draws upon the rich tapestry of Japanese folklore to explore themes of love, transformation, and the boundaries between worlds. Inspired by the ancient legend of ono and the fox spirit, kitsune, this piece serves as a bridge between the mythical and the mundane, the past and the present, the individual and the collective.
In the legend, Ono’s love for his ethereal wife, who is revealed to be a kitsune, a shape-shifting fox spirit, transcends her transformation and departure. Each night, despite her true nature, she returns to him, embodying the duality of separation and union.
Jouan channels this narrative into KITSÜ, a unique piece of art furniture that similarly embraces dualities—serving both as a separator and a unifier, a private sanctuary and a communal space.
