Square lava stone table
Lava stone square table from the 1669 collection, designed by BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group in 2026 for Nerosicilia.
1669 is an exclusive new project born in collaboration with the international studio BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group. The project stems from a shared research platform: a mutual interest in natural materials and their expressive potential when observed and worked with an innovative and contemporary approach.
The collection features dining and coffee tables crafted from lava stone, which celebrates this natural material in its most authentic and raw form. The name references the eruption of 1669, which gave rise to the stone used in their making. The collection is the result of a creative process in which the stone is transformed solely through its intrinsic physical properties and the power of heat, without the use of glues, metals, or binders.
During the experimentation phase, a fascinating phenomenon emerged: when exposed to extreme temperatures, lava stone tends to revert to lava, losing its geometry to take on new, fluid, and unpredictable forms. This reaction inspired the design of 1669: originally conceived with a circular top, the project now evolves through an expansion of the collection that also introduces new square and rectangular geometries.
The cylinder is hollowed out internally through coring, and the removed mass becomes the support for fusing the top. During firing, the top softens and conforms to the shape beneath it, creating a living, organic surface that seems to have just emerged from the volcano itself.
The result is a furnishing piece that becomes sculpture, a synthesis of craftsmanship, ingenuity, and the poetry of matter. 1669 is a tribute to the memory of fire, a design exercise that honors and enhances the essence of lava stone.
1669 is an invitation to look at matter with new eyes, to rediscover in its millennia-old silence a contemporary voice. It is a project born from fire, shaped over time, and presented as a living memory of the Earth.
