On the occasion of the 2024 edition of 3daysofdesign, Midgard will be presenting LOJA, a collection of lamps conceived by German designer Sebastian Herkner. The design interprets the guiding principle of adjustable lighting in a completely new and poetic way: a curved shade made of paper is perched on a translucent glass cylinder that creates a gentle light gradient. The position of the flexible paper shade can be used to easily and playfully change the direction of the light and thus the lighting mood in the room. Together with the selected and fully recyclable materials, the lampshade’s sweeping silhouette makes LOJA an elegant statement piece that meets Midgard's high sustainability standards.
From design icons of classic modernism to a pioneering and durable collection of adjustable lighting: adjustable light is the key feature shared by all designs in the Midgard catalogue. For the new lighting collection – which is named after Eero Saarinen's mother, the Finnish-American textile artist and sculptor LOJA Saarinen – designer Sebastian Herkner turned to the simplestway of directing light: changing the position of the soft, sweeping paper shade allows the proportion of direct or scattered light to be varied as desired. In keeping with the Midgard DNA, the lamp consists of only three materials, which can be separated and are also 100% recyclable: paper, glass and steel. "During product development, it was important to us that our sustainability principles were implemented without compromise," says David Einsiedler from Midgard. All LOJA components are slotted together, not glued. This means that each individual part can be repaired by the user, and the LED and transformer can also be replaced without using any tools. As is customary for Midgard, all the main components of the lamps are sourced in Germany.
Casual gesture: featuring a textile look and feel, the round shade balances on the mouth-blown glass cylinder like a hat.
"The soft, dynamic shape of the lampshade encourages interaction and invites users to direct the light as they wish," says designer Sebastian Herkner. "Like a hat that you wear casually on your head, the shade can be swivelled into the desired position with a flick of the wrist." It comes in different colours that lend each lamp an individual character. The paper is sourced from the fashion industry: reinforced with cellulose, it is compostable, stable and easy to bend. Glass is a material Sebastian Herkner loves to work with frequently. The mouth-blown glass with frosted interior surface that is used for the cylinder of the LOJA luminaire proves to be the ideal material: from the LED in the base, the light is distributed gently upwards through the cylinder, which creates a pleasant diffused lighting mood in the lamp’s environment, and also radiates directly upwards. The effect in the room is striking: "The whole object seems to consist of light," says David Einsiedler. "Even when switched off, LOJA is an absolute statement piece". As such, the new luminaire is not only suitable for private living and dining rooms, but will also add a special note to prestigious spaces such as luxurious hotel lobbies or restaurants.
For its world premiere in Copenhagen, Midgard will be presenting a floor, table and pendant version of LOJA that will feature impressive dimensions: the frosted glass base (diameter 24 cm) of the floor lamp is about 110 cm high. It is crowned by a lampshade with a diameter of 90 cm, while the shade of the pendant lamp has a diameter of 120 cm.
Both the floor lamp and the 50 cm-high table version are fitted with a replaceable LED unit with a bayonet socket, which allows a wide range of lighting options (including tunable white).
