INODA+SVEJE created the TANGĀLI dining chair with the intention of making a big and spacious dining chair. In addition to the version with woven cane seating, they decided to design a version with an upholstered seat for high traffic environments and for customers who preferred a softer seating experience. The backrest retains the signature wrap around cane pattern of the TANGĀLI collection.
Just like the cane seat version, the upholstered version comes in two variants - with arms and without - and can be used as a dining chair or as a desk chair at a study table. Its curved backrest makes it comfortable to sit on for long periods of time.
The seat upholstery is available in the light cream 'Taboga Dove' cotton - linen fabric seen in these images, or a selection of colours from the cotton - linen blended Andaman fabric family.
Having seen the level of skill and dexterity of our cane weavers during their first visit in 2017, INODA+SVEJE pushed our weavers to make patterns that are not traditional to Indian furniture that is now the signature style of the TANGĀLI collection. The contours of the pieces in this collection are completely shaped by hand. We decided to name the collection after the cool monsoon breeze that accompanied their visit to Bangalore - TANGĀLI means cool breeze in the Kannada language (spoken locally in Bangalore where the Phantom Hands workshop is based).
