VDA Telkonet - Умный термостат NOVA
Nova Smart Thermostat is VDA Telkonet’s intelligent thermostat for the hospitality industry, designed to bring together design, comfort, IoT technology, energy management, and customization in a single product.
Developed in collaboration with Gensler, Nova is based on a clear idea: even a traditionally technical device such as a thermostat can become an integral part of guestroom design, integrating with the interior environment without compromising technological performance.
Nova features an LCD display and integrated sensors, allowing guests to manage their comfort through a simple and intuitive interface. Behind this simplicity lies an advanced technological infrastructure capable of connecting the device with both room management systems and energy management platforms.
The value of the project lies in this balance between ease of use and technological complexity.
Human Intelligent Hospitality
Nova is a tangible expression of VDA Telkonet’s Human Intelligent Hospitality vision: using technology to improve the human experience without allowing the complexity of the systems behind it to become a burden for the guest.
Adjusting the temperature is one of the simplest and most frequent interactions within a hotel room. For this reason, the interaction with Nova has been designed to be intuitive and immediate.
Guests do not need to understand the technology managing the room. They simply need to be able to achieve their preferred level of comfort.
At the same time, the system can use room occupancy information to intelligently adapt HVAC operation.
Guest presence therefore becomes the point where two objectives that may appear to be in conflict can converge: ensuring comfort while reducing unnecessary energy consumption.
For VDA Telkonet, Human Intelligent Hospitality means exactly this: advanced yet discreet technology, capable of acting when needed while keeping the human experience at the center.
A Bridge Between Room Management and Energy Management
One of Nova’s distinctive characteristics is its ability to operate within both intelligent room management systems and energy management platforms.
Nova therefore acts as a true bridge between Guest Room Management Systems (GRMS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS), connecting two increasingly interdependent dimensions of contemporary hospitality: guest comfort and energy efficiency.
When integrated with Etheos, VDA Telkonet’s cloud-based room management platform, Nova contributes to the centralized management of temperature and comfort.
When integrated with the Rhapsody software application, VDA Telkonet’s Energy Management platform, the thermostat becomes part of an occupancy-based approach, in which HVAC operation can be adapted according to the guest’s presence in the room.
When the room is unoccupied, the system can reduce HVAC operation rather than unnecessarily maintaining the same comfort conditions required when a guest is present. When needed, comfort conditions are restored.
Therefore, not simply about reducing consumption, but about implementing a form of intelligent energy management, based on data and automation.
Energy is used when it is needed, where it is needed, and to the extent required to ensure guest comfort.
IoT and Integrated Technology
Nova is designed as part of an Internet of Things (IoT) architecture, in which devices, sensors, and platforms can communicate and share information to manage the room more efficiently.
Within this environment, the thermostat is not an isolated device.
Room occupancy data can become one of the inputs used to determine how the HVAC system should operate.
An occupied room and an empty room do not require the same level of energy consumption.
Through the integration of the thermostat, sensors, and the Energy Management system, HVAC operation can automatically adapt to the actual use of the room.
Energy efficiency therefore becomes dynamic, automated, and data-driven.
This approach goes beyond the traditional concept of temperature control and positions Nova within a broader vision of the connected building, where different systems work together.
For VDA Telkonet, innovation does not simply mean adding more technology. It means ensuring that the technologies within a property work together in a coherent and intelligent way.
Sustainability: Energy and Product Lifecycle
Nova’s approach to sustainability operates on two complementary levels.
The first relates to its use within Energy Management systems.
Through occupancy-based management, Nova can help address one of the most common forms of energy waste in hospitality: conditioning an empty room as if it were occupied.
Sensors, IoT connectivity, and automation allow HVAC operation to respond to the actual conditions of the room, reducing consumption when energy is not generating any real benefit for the guest.
The second level concerns the design of the product itself.
Nova has been developed according to a modular principle that separates its electronic core from its visible aesthetic elements and external finishes.
When a room is renovated or its interior design concept evolves, the appearance of the thermostat can be customized without necessarily replacing the entire device.
One Electronic Core. Multiple Finishes.
This design choice makes it possible to:
Extend the product lifecycle.
Reduce unnecessary replacement of electronic components.
Limit electronic waste.
Separate the lifecycle of the electronics from that of the interior design.
Allow the product to evolve aesthetically together with the property over time.
Nova’s sustainability is therefore not linked to a single feature. It encompasses both the energy the product can help save during operation and the resources it can help preserve throughout its lifecycle.
Customization and Interior Design
A technological device inside a hotel room should not feel disconnected from the overall design.
Nova was created around this principle.
Materials, colors, and finishes can be selected to create continuity with the interior design and identity of the property, allowing the thermostat to integrate naturally within very different environments, from contemporary hospitality projects to luxury and high-end properties.
Nova is available in a range of material solutions, including polycarbonate, glass, and metal, with the possibility of developing configurations that reflect the hotel’s design concept.
Customization is therefore not treated as a decorative afterthought, but as an integral part of the product design.
The same technological core can take on different aesthetic identities, adapting to the requirements of designers, architects, and hotel brands.
In this way, technology no longer represents a constraint for interior design. It becomes part of its language.
Design by Gensler
The collaboration with Gensler reflects VDA Telkonet’s decision to approach the Nova project not only from a technological perspective, but also through a design culture capable of bringing together form, function, materials, and user experience.
The objective was to transform a component traditionally perceived as purely technical into a product capable of integrating with the architectural and interior design of the guestroom.
The collaboration with Gensler is therefore consistent with the direction VDA Telkonet has taken in recent years: bringing hospitality technology increasingly closer to the worlds of architecture and interior design.
Nova embodies this approach in an essential, recognizable, and customizable product, where technology and aesthetics are developed as parts of the same design process.

Nova, in Summary
With Nova Smart Thermostat, we wanted to rethink an apparently simple object by starting from the real needs of contemporary hospitality.
We wanted an intuitive device for guests, capable of communicating with both room management and energy management systems. A product that could contribute to reducing energy consumption without compromising comfort. A technology able to adapt to the interior design, rather than requiring the interior design to adapt to it. And finally, a product designed to last longer, thanks to a modular architecture that separates aesthetic evolution from the useful life of its electronics.
Nova was created from these requirements.
An intelligent thermostat that connects people, space, energy, and technology, translating the complexity of a connected system into a simple and natural experience.
