Since the Second World War, concrete has been the most widely used construction material in our country.‎ Over the years, concrete technology has undergone major advances that have made it possible to produce increasingly high-performance concrete mixes, both in terms of strength and durability.‎ The use of super-water-reducing admixtures and mineral additives such as fly ash now make it possible to realise concretes with low water/cement ratios and therefore with extremely low porosity quite easily.‎ Furthermore, the fundamental importance of routine maintenance has been understood, without which even the most durable of materials is doomed to deterioration.‎ For this reason, every structure today must compulsorily include a maintenance manual in which all the operations necessary to guarantee daily functionality are described in detail.‎ Ultimately, thanks to technical and regulatory progress, it is now possible to build structures that are extremely durable and capable of guaranteeing, with good margins of tolerance, the required Useful Life values.‎ The situation is different for structures built until recently, that is, until the entry into force of Ministerial Decree 14 January 2008.‎ Unfortunately, either through negligence or technical ignorance, these structures were designed and built without considering the aspect of durability.‎ The concrete put in place only had a structural function, while as far as durability was concerned, they mostly relied on the old belief that concrete was eternal.‎ The result of this is there for all to see: structures between 20 and 30 years old often show signs of more or less marked deterioration and require rehabilitation.‎
