Phantom Hands
OFFICE ARMCHAIR X LEG
Teak chair with armrests
A handmade re-edition of the OFFICE ARMCHAIR with cross legs (X leg) designed for buildings in Chandigarh in the 1960s. Symmetric ‘X’ or ‘cross’ units on either side form a unified armrest and leg assembly. The curved backrest is freestanding and bowed. The X legged version of the OFFICE ARMCHAIR was not made in very large quantities; the V legged version was produced in far larger numbers in the prolific period between the mid 1950s to mid 1970s.
Wood finish: Natural Teak / Dark Stain / Z4 Walnut
Weave type: Diamond Weave / Cross Weave
Project Chandigarh is our homage to Indian Modernism, a style and philosophy of making that manifested in Chandigarh in the 1950s. Our re-editions's of these mid-century designs use the same craftsmanship and philosophy of making that was used for three decades in Chandigarh. The nuances and details that make these designs special – finger joints, curvatures, grooves – are retained while improving the pieces structurally and materially. The natural rattan cane used for the seats and backs are peeled and woven by hand, by highly skilled weavers just like in the vintage pieces.
