Phantom Hands SIDE TABLE V-LEG Rectangular teak console table with drawers

In the mid-fifties, Pierre Jeanneret, in addition to his ongoing work for the Capitol complex buildings, also designed some furniture for private residences in Chandigarh.‎ The pieces usually followed his standard template of simple, sturdy woodworking, paired with an element of visual dynamism, courtesy the diagonal line in his signature ‘compass leg’, or the daring ‘X-leg’.‎ The ‘chest of drawers’ was one such piece - a two-drawer unit made of teak, with a pair of asymmetric ‘compass’-style legs on either side.‎ The re-edition of this piece is the SIDE TABLE V-LEG.‎ Made of teak, it carries all the structural nuances of the original - mitre joints (additionally splined for strength), gently rounded edges on the legs, and the circular, finger-pull recesses on the drawers.‎ Additionally, in Phantom Hands' re-edition, the drawers are mounted on German-engineered soft-close channels in galvanised steel, for smooth opening and closing.‎ The height and proportions of the original piece have been modified in this re-edition to make it suitable for use as either a bedside table or a standalone unit.‎ Project Chandigarh is our homage to Indian Modernism, a style and philosophy of making that manifested in Chandigarh in the 1950s.‎ Our re-editions's of these mid-century designs use the same craftsmanship and philosophy of making that was used for three decades in Chandigarh.‎ The nuances and details that make these designs special – finger joints, curvatures, grooves – are retained while improving the pieces structurally and materially.‎ The natural rattan cane used for the seats and backs are peeled and woven by hand, by highly skilled weavers just like in the vintage pieces.‎ Further info from manufacturer on SIDE TABLE V-LEG Phantom Hands
