Phantom Hands STUDY DESK X-LEG Rectangular teak desk with drawers

The decade from 1955 to 1965 was probably Pierre Jeanneret’s most prolific in terms of the furniture he would design for government and public buildings in Chandigarh.‎ The furniture for these spaces reflected both the solemnity and the symbolism of their contexts, while keeping a clear-eyed view of the materials available, and designs that would lend themselves easily to mass production.‎ The compact STUDY DESK X-LEG was originally designed for many of Chandigarh’s administrative offices, where the flair of its X leg would be balanced out by the straight lines of the rest of the structure.‎ The floating, leather covered desktop added a subtle, authoritative touch.‎ This re-edition is true to the design of the original and carries all its structural nuances - mitre joints (with mortise and tenon reinforcement), gently rounded edges on the legs, and the circular, finger-pull recesses on the drawers and the storage compartment.‎ Additionally, our re-edition comes with international standard German-engineered hardware.‎ The drawers are mounted on soft-close channels in galvanised steel for smooth opening and closing; and the storage compartment behind the drawers has soft-close nickel-plated steel hinges which prevent slamming, and reduce stress on the panel.‎ Project Chandigarh is our homage to Indian Modernism, a style and philosophy of making that manifested in Chandigarh in the 1950s.‎ Our re-editions's of these mid-century designs use the same craftsmanship and philosophy of making that was used for three decades in Chandigarh.‎ The nuances and details that make these designs special – finger joints, curvatures, grooves – are retained while improving the pieces structurally and materially.‎ The natural rattan cane used for the seats and backs are peeled and woven by hand, by highly skilled weavers just like in the vintage pieces.‎ Further info from manufacturer on STUDY DESK X-LEG Phantom Hands
