AS LONG AS THE NIGHT LASTS
Acrylic lamp with GPS
As Long As The Night Lasts is a light piece that automatically synchronizes with the local sunset and sunrise of its installation site. Using an embedded GPS module, it calculates the exact time of dusk and dawn for that location, turns on automatically at sunset, and turns off automatically at sunrise.
During the night, the light gradually disappears from one side to the other, quietly visualizing the passing hours of darkness. Rather than simply illuminating a room, the piece gives form to the length of the night itself—allowing time to be felt as a slow spatial change.
In addition to its sunset-to-sunrise synchronized mode, the piece can be switched to a constant lighting mode for everyday use. It can be used as a tabletop piece and can also be wall-mounted, depending on the setting. Custom versions can also be made to synchronize with the night cycle of a specific location anywhere in the world upon request.
The work was born from a longing for a rhythm of life aligned with natural light, before standardized schedules and electric lighting made time feel uniform. It reflects an admiration for a way of living closer to the cycles of sunset and sunrise—an atmosphere often associated with premodern Japan, including the seasonal and bodily sense of time found in the Edo period. In this sense, the piece is not only a lamp, but a small equipment for living with night.
