SAIL ME AWAY
LED table lamp with dimmer and speaker
Sail Me Away is a small boat-shaped light piece. Carefully sculpted as an object, it transforms a room into an open sea and quietly invites a sense of voyage.
The piece is USB-powered (non-rechargeable). Tilting it forward or backward controls dimming and on/off, while tilting it to the left or right activates a speaker mounted on the back, playing the sound of the open ocean. Through these gestures, the work becomes more than a lamp, gently guiding the user into the feeling of setting out on a journey.
The boat is inspired by traditional Japanese cargo ships used in the Edo period for domestic maritime transport. During Japan’s period of national isolation, these ships were not intended for open-ocean travel; within that limitation, their form emerged as a practical and economical solution, characterized by a single-sail structure.
Reimagined as Living Equipment, this boat appears in the present not as a historical reproduction, but as a small device that stirs wanderlust in everyday life.
